The Welsh pony is a breed of pony native to the Wales area of the United Kingdom. There is evidence that suggests a Welsh-type pony existed prior to 1600 BC. Often combined with the Welsh cob, this breed is separated into four sections that are separated by height and other variations. The sections are Welsh Mountain Pony, the Welsh Pony, the Welsh Pony of Cob Type and the Welsh Cob. All sections are known for their gentle temperament, free-moving gaits and extreme hardiness.
Welsh ponies have been used for a variety of events during their history, including a cavalry horse, pit pony, working animal and competitive events. Today, the most popular uses are in show events as well as pleasure and trail riding.
