The Tarentaise originate in the French Apls. This auburn colored breed is known to be the least mixed of all French breeds. They were primarily used for milk production but due to their adaptability to their harsh habitat, they were naturally selected for their muscular build and hardiness to be used in beef production as well.
Today, the Tarentaise is used by the French only for milk and Beaufort cheese production. The average production is 12,199 lbs of milk in a 305 day lactation period with no added feed concentrates. Mature bulls weigh from 1,600 to 2,100 lbs. while mature Tarentaise cows weigh from weigh from 900 to 1,300 lbs.
This breed is distinguished for its abundant muscling and marbling since they are used to climbing at high altitudes which has resulted in a strong cardiovascular system. They also display excellent fertility, feet and legs built for traveling, longevity, a moderate frame and natural adaptability to varied conditions.
