Swaledale is an English breed of domestic sheep that is predominately found in the mountainous areas of Great Britain. Swaledale sheep are exceptionally hardy and able to endure the hardships of exposed and high lying environments. They have a distinct appearance with their off-white wool, wide curled horns and a face that is black on the upper portion and white on the lower part.
Swaledale’s are used primarily for the production of lamb and mutton. The mutton from a Swaledale sheep is considered to be high quality with preferred flavor and tenderness. Ewes are excellent mothers and the adverse conditions of their environment do not diminish that capacity. The wool produced from a Swaledale is durable and has many uses although it is of little value.
