Similar to the Russian Fighting Geese, these birds are small, lightweight birds that have a reputation for being aggressive. The native names for the Steinbacher is both France and Germany translates to “fighting goose.” They are believed to be a cross between local geese in Eastern Germany and Chinese geese.

The grey color variety is considered standard, although blue, cream and buff varieties exist. Females will traditionally lay 30 – 50 white eggs per year. The appearance of a Steinbacher goose is distinct in its orange bill with black bean. Currently, they are not accepted into the American Poultry Association.
