Slate is a breed of domestic turkey named after the slate gray color of its plumage. This breed is sometimes called Blue Slate, while light variations are called Lavender turkeys. Slate turkeys can actually be a variety of colors, from pure black to pure white. According to the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection, only slate-gray colored birds can be shown.
The Slate turkey is less documented than any other breed and has such a wide range of color varieties that it is difficult to breed with any consistency. Typically, Slate hens are a lighter hue and should weigh 14 pounds while toms are darker and should weigh 23 pounds. Today, this breed is considered critically endangered.
