The Shire is a breed of draft horses that originated in England and has a reputation for pulling brewery wagons to the ale houses. This is an exceptionally large breed, with Shires holding the world records for both largest overall horse and tallest horse at varying times. Shires can stand over 68 inches tall and have an unusually high capacity for weight pulling.
Stallions are accepted if they are black, bay and grey. They may not be roan or have a large amount of white markings. Their legs usually have long, white hair known as feathers. Today, many breweries still carry on the tradition of having their ale delivered by Shire-drawn carts. Shires are also used for forestry work and leisure riding.
