Shetland is a Scottish breed of Northern European short-tailed sheep that are native to the Shetland Isles. Unlike their commercial counterparts, this breed is smaller with a slower growth rate. However, they have survived on poor diets in poor conditions for centuries and still maintain many of their primitive survival instincts. This, combined with their hardiness, adaptability, longevity and easy lambing, make them an easier breed to care for compared to other sheep breeds. The rams are horned while the ewes are polled. Today, Shetland sheep are raised for meat, wool and conservation grazing.

Shetland’s have a reputation for their very fine, soft wool that can be produced in over 30 different varieties of colors. The meat from a Shetland sheep is also considered to be of high quality, though it has limited commercial use.
