San Juan rabbits are the offspring of wild rabbits from Europe that were brought to San Juan Island off the coast of Washington State by settlers over 100 years ago. In all those years, interestingly, the colony of rabbits remained localized either because of their family attachments or the forage is rich on the Island, and so the rabbits didn’t need to forage far; the reasons are unclear.
According to most estimates, just 500 San Juan rabbits remain on the island due to local authorities having taken measures to eradicate them. These rabbits are now a treasure trove of genetic material.
San Juan rabbits are wild-agouti colored and weigh only 3 - 5 1/2 pounds.
