Royal White is an American breed of domestic sheep that was developed by Dorpcroix Farm in Texas during the 1990s with the goal of producing lean, tender meat. This was achieved by selective breeding of St. Croix and Dorpers to create a hybrid breed that produces more meat with less fat and less wool. Royal White sheep are considered diseases resistant, vigorous and fast growing.
All Royal Whites are pure white and naturally polled with horizontally held ears. As a hair breed, ideally it should have well-proportioned body that is close to the ground to prevent heat loss in inclement weather. The meat produced from a Royal White is considered tender with a mildly sweet flavor and the leather produced is considered garment quality.
Royal White is the only new American breed of sheep to be created in the past 25 years.
