Romney, also known as Romney Marsh, is an English breed of domestic sheep that is considered an economically important breed to the sheep meat and wool trade in New Zealand.
The Romney sheep are a long haired breed, with the wool growing over the entire body including the legs. They are naturally polled and white fleece is the accepted standard, although colored fleece is possible. Although it is on the larger size of the sheep breeds, specific measurements vary between countries.
Romney sheep are not prolific. This breed produces heavy wool, which is due to its fiber length and sees a clean yield of 75 – 80%. Romney’s make up a large majority New Zealand’s sheep population and since it is the world’s leading exporter of frozen lamb, it is vitally important economically.
