Rhodebar chickens are a rare breed of poultry that when bred correctly can be an excellent utility bird. They were developed in the UK in 1947 by crossing Golden Brussbar cockerels with Rhode Island Red hens. Rhodebar chickens are good layers and have the ability to lay up to 200 large brown eggs in their first year. They also produce a good carcass.
Like many other breeds, Rhodebar chickens are an auto sexing breed, meaning day old chicks can be differentiated by sex based on their appearance. Male chicks are yellow while the females have dark stripes down their back. Grown, Rhodebars are a dark reddish color that resembles a Rhode Island Red, just without the black tip on the tail.
