As the name implies, The Rhinelander rabbit hails from Germany, having made its appearance in the rabbit world at a show in 1902. Of the 45 breeds of rabbits listed in the American Rabbit Breeders Standard of Perfection, the Rhinelander is one of the five “running breeds,” and the only tri-colored breed, making The Rhinelander rabbit one-of-a-kind.
The Rhinelander is an arched breed of rabbit. They have short legs and a cylindrical-shaped body, with the body being the same width from shoulders to hip. They weight between 6 - 10 lb. The breed is also known for its "butterfly markings" which cover the nose and upper jaw in a shape resembling a butterfly.
Today, their population is estimated at less than 2,000 by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.
