Related to the ostrich and emu, Rhea is a large, flightless bird native to South America. There are two sub-species of rhea, the American rhea and the Darwin rhea, both of which are considered near-threatened in their native regions. These large birds can stand 5.5 feet tall at the top of their head and weigh up to 88 pounds.

Rheas have a brown-grey plumage, with a long neck and long legs. While they cannot fly, they use their wings like sails to enhance running. The natural habitat of both rhea species is open grasslands. Unless it is mating season, these birds are usually silent. They live in packs of 20 – 25 birds, although they disband during mating season. When attacked, they run in a zig-zag pattern to avoid a predator.
