The Oxford, or Oxford Down, sheep is an English breed of domestic sheep developed in 1830 and used primarily for meat. The original Oxfords were a cross-breed of the Cotswold, Hampshire, and South Down.
Oxford sheep are one of the largest breeds of sheep, with mature rams weighing up to 300 pounds and are naturally polled. Only the Lincoln breed is heavier. Both rams are ewes have a black face and legs with a body covered in white wool and a short fleece. Fleeces taken from a mature ewe can weigh between 8 – 12 pounds.
Oxford ewes are excellent mothers and lambs are strong at birth. Oxfords are also excellent feeders and do well with an abundant food supply.
