The Ostrich is the largest bird in the world, although it is flightless. They are the only living member of the genus Struthio. This animal is native to Africa, where it roams the savanna and desert lands. Ostrich’s stand 7 – 9 feet tall and weigh between 220 – 350 pounds. They live in small herds, typically less than 12 birds, led by an alpha-male and dominant hen.

Ostriches cannot fly but can sprint up to 43 miles per hour and run distances at 31 miles per hour. With each stride, an ostrich can cover 10 – 16 feet. Their legs can also be dangerous weapons as they can be used to kill a human or predator since each foot has a long claw on it. Their diet typically consists of plants, roots and seeds but they will eat other small creatures when available.
