North Ronaldsay is a rare breed of sheep from North Ronaldsay, which is the northern most of the Orkney Islands in Scotland. Raised primarily for wool, this breed of sheep has a unique existence since it survives only on seaweed for several months of the year. This is because they are confined to the shoreline by a dry-stone wall to protect the limited grazing inland.
North Ronaldsay sheep have adapted to their environment and therefore seem different than many other breeds. Instead of grazing during the day as most breeds do, these sheep graze in line with the tide twice a day. Their unusual diet has also led their digestive system to break down sugar more effectively but also made it more susceptible to toxicity of copper. Their wool can be any color, from white to black, making it popular with hand spinners, textile designers, felters and knitters.
