Normande cattle date back to cattle brought to France in the 1st and 2nd centuries by Vikings. Since then, Normande has a strong reputation in France as dual-purpose cattle. These cattle are moderately sized, with bulls ranging from 2,000 – 2,400 pounds and cows 1,200 – 1,500 pounds, extremely effective feed converters and are typically red and white.
Normande cows are primarily used to provide rich milk for the famous cheese industry, specifically Livarot, Camembert, and Pont-Lévêque cheeses. They are also known for their calving ease and production longevity. Besides its rich milk production, the Normande cattle produce a high percentage yield at slaughter due to its high muscle mass and smaller heads. The beef has a reputation of superior marbling quality, flavor and tenderness.
