Considered to be the oldest turkey breed in the United Kingdom, Norfolk Blacks are domestic turkeys that true to their name have entirely black plumage. This breed was developed in Europe by crossing Aztec turkeys brought from Spanish explorers.
Norfolk Black turkeys were unique in that few existing breeds at the time had a black plumage. Once the popularity of Norfolk Black turkeys expanded, the characteristic of black plumage was selectively bred for to create dominance within turkeys. Standard for this breed requires that the turkeys be free from any brownish, bronze or white plumage. Instead, it must be entirely black with a greenish sheen.
