The New Zealand Red rabbits were the first New Zealand rabbits to appear and they share basically the same characteristics as all the other New Zealand rabbits. What sets them apart is obviously their color which is a golden red or a deep russet color.
They are excellent for meat production weigh between 9 – 12lbs. These rabbits have a medium build; the body is fairly broad with a slightly arched back, the head shapely with full cheeks and upright ears. Their hair is medium size and feels coarser and less soft than most breeds.
New Zealand Reds are rarely aggressive so they are usually good with children and other pets, being relaxed about being handled; they are calm, easy-going and friendly rabbits.
