Milking Shorthorn is an average sized but highly efficient dairy cattle that originated in Great Britain. Milking Shorthorn cows weigh an average of 1,400 – 1,500 pounds and are typically red, red with white markings, roan or white. They are known for their excellent milk production with many producing over 20,000 pound of milk per lactation period.
Other attractive attributes of Milking Shorthorn cattle are their high levels of grazing efficiency, gentle disposition and resistance to many diseases. They produce relatively smaller calves with the shortest calving interval of any breed at only 12.8 months.
The milk from a Milking Shorthorn has desirable qualities that can garner a higher price, including a favorable fat-protein ratio needed for cheese.
