Closely related to the Andalusian horse, the Lusitano horse, of Portuguese origins, used to be a war hose. After mixing with Barb horses, they became useful for dressage and bull fighting. There are three breed lineages within the Lusitano breed: Andrade, Veiga and Coudelaria Nacional, plus the Alter Real strain founded by the Portuguese royal family.
Lusitanos can be any solid color but usually are found in bay, chestnut or gray. The Alter Real strain are always bay. They are a Baroque type with heavy muscling and an agile and elevated gait. They are also intelligent and willing animals. Nowadays they are only used for dressage, driving and bloodless bullfighting and have been in several dressage teams.
Lusitano horses usually stand between 15.2 and 15.3 hands, although some stand over 16 hands.
