Developed in 1974 by the Trangie Agricultural Research Center in Australia, the Lowline Angus cattle appear to be, but are not, dwarfs. Instead, they are the result of specifically breeding Angus cattle with low growth rate in order to increase beef production per acre. Their ease of calving, low nutritional requirements (1/3 compared with larger breeds) and premium quality of beef have made the Lowline Angus a popular breed among many farmers. Their small stature provides a great opportunity for smaller farmers, with cows weighing approximately 800 pounds and bulls 1,200 pounds. They are black, naturally polled and easy to handle cattle that can adapt to varying climates.
The Lowline Angus cattle were not introduced to the United States until 1997.
