llama-pictureThe llama is a domesticated camelid native to South America. It is believed that these animals originated in the central plains of North America over 4 million years ago. They were extinct in North America by the end of the last ice age; however there were over seven million llamas and alpacas in South America as of 2007.

These animals are used primarily for meat and as a pack animal. Llamas stand between 5.6 – 5.9 feet tall at the top of their head and can weigh between 290 – 440 pounds. They live in herds and are considered very intelligent, with the ability to learn simple tasks.

Llamas also produce lanolin-free, very soft wool.

We always strongly encourage you to thoroughly check out each animal breeder you are interested in purchasing from before you make your final decision. With over 25,000 different breeders listed on this website, it is impossible for us to be able to vouch for every one! And while we do our best to ensure only the top farmers are listed here, it's always best to double check yourself.
