The llama is a domesticated camelid native to South America. It is believed that these animals originated in the central plains of North America over 4 million years ago. They were extinct in North America by the end of the last ice age; however there were over seven million llamas and alpacas in South America as of 2007.
These animals are used primarily for meat and as a pack animal. Llamas stand between 5.6 – 5.9 feet tall at the top of their head and can weigh between 290 – 440 pounds. They live in herds and are considered very intelligent, with the ability to learn simple tasks.
Llamas also produce lanolin-free, very soft wool.
