The Limousin breed of beef cattle has a history dating back to the beginning of Europe. Cave drawings found in regions of France dating back approximately 20,000 years depict cattle strongly resembling the Limousin. Limousins are golden-red with a reputation for having a strong work ethic and excellent beef qualities. Today, they are popular because of their ease of calving, high ratio of meat to carcass, and ability to produce lean but tender meat.
Studies have shown Limousin cattle have one of the highest feed efficiency rates, making them a popular for crossbreeding with Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn. Due to the climate in which they originate, Limousins are extremely muscular and have been known for a volatile temperament and being able to clear fences with ease.
