katahdin-sheepThe Katahdin sheep breed was the first in the United States to reach sheep industry standards of carcass quality. The average Katahdin ewe weighs 120 to 160 lbss and the ram 180 to 250 lbs. Most Katahdin ewes will have a 200% lamb crop.

The Katahdin sheds its winter coat, so it doesn’t have to be sheared. Their hair coat varies in length and texture and can be any color or color combination. It generally consists of coarse outer hair fibers and an undercoat naturally sheds as temperature and day length increase seasonally, leaving a shorter, smooth summer coat.

Ewes and rams exhibit early puberty and generally have a long life. Mature ewes usually have twins, occasionally producing triplets or quadruplets. Katahdins are docile and exhibit moderate flocking instinct. They are hardy, adaptable, and produce lean, meaty carcasses.

We always strongly encourage you to thoroughly check out each animal breeder you are interested in purchasing from before you make your final decision. With over 25,000 different breeders listed on this website, it is impossible for us to be able to vouch for every one! And while we do our best to ensure only the top farmers are listed here, it's always best to double check yourself.
