karakul-sheepThe Karakul may be the oldest breed of domesticated sheep. Archeological evidence indicates them being raised in Central Asia since 1400 BC. Carvings of a Karakul type have been found on ancient Babylonian temples.

Karakuls are medium-sized sheep. Rams weigh from 175 to 225 lbs; ewes range from 100 to 150 lbs. They are tall, with long, narrow bodies. Rams may be naturally polled or horned; ewes are usually polled.

Karakul sheep are kept for milking, meat, pelts and wool. Pelts of newborn Karakul lambs are known as Persian lamb or astrakhan. Neonatal Karakul lambs are slaughtered for their black pelts prior to 3 days of age, lest their lovely coats lose texture. These high-priced pelts resemble watered silk. The Karakul fur trade is alive in certain parts of the world; it is what gives the Karakul its high demand.

We always strongly encourage you to thoroughly check out each animal breeder you are interested in purchasing from before you make your final decision.
