icelandic-sheepThis breed is a direct descendant of the sheep brought to the island by the early Viking settlers. They are of medium size with mature ewes weighing 150-160 lbs. and rams 200-220 lbs. The breed has both polled and horned rams and ewes but it is primarily horned. They are seasonal breeders; the ewes can easily lamb at 12 months of age. Ram lambs can start breeding around seven months old.

The colors of Icelandic sheep display more variety in color and pattern than most other breeds. The base color is black, white or moorit, each coming in a variety of shades and tones. The average weight of their fleece is 4-5 lbs. The fleece is down-like, springy, lustrous and soft. Additionally, their skin is excellent for pelt skin.

In Iceland, this breed is almost exclusively bred for meat.

We always strongly encourage you to thoroughly check out each animal breeder you are interested in purchasing from before you make your final decision. With over 25,000 different breeders listed on this website, it is impossible for us to be able to vouch for every one! And while we do our best to ensure only the top farmers are listed here, it's always best to double check yourself.
