Icelandic ponies are actually a breed of a horse native to Iceland that is called ponies due to their small stature. Iceland maintains strict control over their population of Icelandic horses, including preventing them from being imported to other countries and banned exported animals from returning. This control has led to a breed of animal that is extremely disease resistant.
Icelandic ponies average 52 – 56 inches in height with over 100 names for various colors and color patterns in the Icelandic language, including chestnut, black, grey and palomino. This breed has developed a double coat in order to adapt to the cold temperatures. They are a five-gaited breed known for being sure footed and its ability to cross rough terrain.
