Heck cattle were the result of two Nazi-funded zoologists attempting to revive the extinct aurochs species. Assuming aurochs were what all other domestic cattle descended from, they attempted to bring it back by using Spanish fighting bulls. With no actual relation to the aurochs, Heck cattle have long, straight horns and a dark coat that gives them an ancient appearance. After World War II, most Heck cattle were killed but some have remained in German zoos.
Heck cattle are popular in conservation projects but have made the news after a farmer in Britain put down the majority of his herd due to their aggressive nature. There are an estimated 2,000 Heck cattle left in Europe and few elsewhere.
