The Hebridean sheep is one of the primitive breeds from northwestern Europe. They are small and fine boned, with black or dark brown wool. The face and legs are free of wool and are covered with glossy black hair.
Both sexes can have two pairs of horns. Rams have massive horns for the size of the animal. Two-horned rams and ewes have horns that sweep upwards from the head before spiraling backwards and outwards.
They are hardy animals and are often used as "conservation grazing" animals for their effectiveness in scrub control and excellent foraging skills.
Ewes typically weigh 75-90 lbs and rams 110- 130 lbs. Adult fleeces range from black to dark brown; the average ewe fleece weighs about 3 lbs and ram fleeces about 6 - 9 lbs. The staple length is 3 - 37 cm and micron count is between 33 and 38.
