The German Riding pony, also known as Deutsche Reitpony, is an extremely popular breed of pony in Germany. It is not well known in North America. German Riding ponies are very similar to full sized horses with the exception of their head being very pony-Iike. This breed averages 138 – 148 cm in height although some are up to 151 cm and can compete against full-sized horses in certain competitions.
They were bred starting in 1965 specifically for use with children and adolescence by crossing various English ponies. Used in pony sport horse competitions, this breed excels in dressage, show jumping and eventing with a smooth way of going.
