Gelbvieh cattle originated in Germany and were originally bred to be triple purpose cattle, used for milk, beef and draught. They are medium in size and can be found horned or polled. 80% of the Gelbvieh population is black; other colors include golden to dark red. In 1958, Germany imposed a strict breeding program for this breed in order to improve milk and beef production.
While Gelbvieh have excellent milk abilities, today they are used primarily for beef. Gelbvieh females are one of the top breeds for fertility, age at puberty, and pounds weaned per cow. Gelbvieh cattle are the youngest breed at maturity. Other notable characteristics include a quiet temperament and fast growth rate, allowing them to produce high quality young meat.
