Named after the area in Scotland it originated in, Galloway cattle are one of the oldest breeds in existence. Galloway cattle are similar to the Highland breed in appearance. They are usually black and have a stump called a pol instead of horns. Any appearance of horns has been a sign of cross-breeding. They are medium in size, with cows weighing in around 1,000 pounds and bulls at 1,600 pounds.
Galloway cattle have a distinctive long, shaggy coat which allows them to adapt to colder climates and shed it during summer months. This thick coat prevents excess fat under the skin resulting in a high-quality meat from solely a free-range diet; the hide is also used for coats and blankets.
