Fat-tailed sheep are a type of coarse-wooled and semi-coarse-wooled sheep used for meat and lard production since they have fat deposits on the sacrum. Fat-tailed sheep breeds comprise approximately 25% of the world sheep population. They are adapted to breeding in desert and semi-desert regions. The majority of breeds in this group have characteristically high meat productivity.
These sheep were specifically bred for the unique quality of the fat stored in the tail area which is used for cooking. The carcass quality of these sheep is good, with most of the fat concentrated in the tail area, it could account for as much as 10 lbs. The rams weigh 240–290 lbs the ewes 130–190 lbs.
The wool productivity is low: the average clipping in most breeds is 4.5 - 5 lbs.
