The Elk is one of the largest species within the deer family as well as one of the largest land mammals in North America and eastern Asia. The only larger animals from this family are the moose and the south Asian sambar. Elk are found in the forest and forest-edge areas, where their diet consists of leaves, bark, grasses and plants. These animals tend to stay in gender segregated group throughout the year, coming together only during mating season.
The male Elk participate in ritualized mating behavior, including posturing, antler sparring, bulging. They also have large antlers which are shed each year and can be almost 4 feet long and up to 40 pounds. Elk are typically hunted as a game species, their meat is known for being higher in protein and leaner compared with beef and chicken.
