Drum horses are extremely rare horses and are linked to the horses used in British regiments for carrying the heavy silver drums used in marches. Drum horses are the result of Gypsy crosses with either Shire or Clydesdale horses. No breed must exceed 87% of the total conformation and Gypsy blood must not go below 12.5%. It’s a breed that displays athleticism, agility and good performance for riding.
It’s considered an elegant heavy horse, large and well-muscled, with good bone formation, a kind disposition and abundant hair, especially heavy feathering on the legs. They can stand between 14-16 hands tall and always have a good character. Their colors may be either solid or colored.
Nowadays, people aim to create Drum horses with the original Shire horse coloring. Some breeders are skeptical of calling Drum horses a breed and much prefers calling them a Gypsy cross.
