The Dexter cattle are the smallest of the European cattle breeds at just 36 – 44 inches across at the shoulders. Originating in Ireland, their small size and friendly personality makes them a great addition to a small homestead or family with children. They are also known for their versatility, since they can be used for both rich milk and lean beef.
Dexter cattle will produce between 1 – 2 gallons of milk per day, with high butterfat content (4%). This is much more manageable for a small family than the larger quantities produced from other cattle breeds. If raised for beef, Dexters will produce a tender, lean meat. If grain fed, they will produce approximately 250 pounds at 12 months and up to 500 pounds at 24 months.
