Cubalaya chickens are a Cuban breed developed from birds imported from the Philippines. They are bred as a triple-purpose breed, being used for meat and egg production as well as the illegal sport of cock-fighting.
Cubalaya chickens are known for their elegant appearance, most notably a unique downward tail with lavish feathers. The colors that are generally accepted are white, black and black breasted red. They are known for producing quality meat as well as reliable egg production but are slow to mature, taking up to three years. The hens have a tame disposition but the males have been known to be extremely aggressive. Today, they are rarely raised outside of Cuba.
