Cotton Patch is a breed of domestic goose that originated in the Southern United States. The name Cotton Patch comes from the fact that this breed was typically used to weed cotton, corn and other fields. Due to their origin, these birds are well adapted to southern temperatures and are considered very heat tolerant. Their bodies are slimmer than most goose breeds and they are able to fly well into adulthood.
Cotton Patch geese are a landrace breed and are similar in color to the Shetland and Pilgrim geese. Originally, they were kept mainly on extremely rural farms and used for weeding, meat, eggs, grease and down. Once they were no longer needed for weeding, they became very rare and are considered critical by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.
