Corriedale sheep originate in New Zealand and Australia, resulting from a cross between Lincoln or Leicester rams with Merino ewes. The breed can be found worldwide and has large populations in South America, Asia, North America and South Africa. It’s the second most popular breed after Merinos.
This breed is a dual-purpose breed that is polled with a large frame. They are used to sire lambs for meat but are gaining popularity with the purebred lambs of the breed. Corriedales also produce bountiful wool that ranges between 31.5 – 24.5 microns. Mature ewes can produce 10 to 17 lbs of fleece with a staple length of 3.5 to 6 inches.
Ram can weigh between 175-275 lbs and ewes between 130-180 lbs. Ewes are very fertile with potential for fall lambing and multiple births. These sheep are also adaptable to a variety of geographic regions and production systems.
