The Charolais cattle are a tourine beef breed native to southeastern France. Primarily raised for meat production, the Charolais are also crossed with other breeds frequently, especially the Angus and Hereford. There is also a crossbreed known as Charbray, which is a cross with Brahman cattle. Charolais cattle are typically white, naturally horned with large, long bodies.
Charolais bulls can easily weigh over 2,500 pounds, with cows weighing 1,500 to over 2,000 pounds. Besides their carcass qualities, they are good milk producers and have a reputation for being abrasive in nature. They are adaptable to changes in temperatures and will graze aggressively in warmer months. In France, this is the second most popular cattle breed after Holstein and the most common beef breed.
