Originating in Spain and south-western France, the Catalan donkey is a large breed that is considered one of the oldest breeds in the world. It’s considered the national symbol of Catalonia. Traditionally, they have been used for agriculture, transport and mining.
Catalan donkeys generally weigh between 770–990 lb. Jacks average 56 inches in height, and jennies 136 54 inches. They are dark brown in color with a white mouth and belly. This breed has been used to develop other donkey breeds all over the world, including the United States because of their stocky physique and resistance to cold and diseases. Today there are only about 500 pure bred Catalan donkeys.
