The Camel is an even-toed ungulate that is known for its “humps”, which are actually fatty deposits. There are two remaining species of camel, the dromedary and the Bactrian. The Dromedary is a one-hump camel that is found in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. The Bactrian is a two-hump camel that is found in Central Asia. Both species are domesticated and raised for their meat, milk and hair production as well as their ability to be work animals.
Camels have a 40 – 50 year life expectancy and are quite large, standing an average of six feet tall and weighing up to 2,200 pounds. They can run in short bursts up to 40 miles per hour and sustain a run of 25 miles per hour. Camel milk is extremely rich in vitamins, proteins, immunoglobulins and nutrients and is considered a staple of desert nomad tribes’ diets.
