BraunviehBraunvieh, a German word meaning brown cow, is a breed of cattle most often associated with Swiss Alps. This is one of the oldest breeds of cattle with records of Braunvieh cattle dating back as far as 1600 in Switzerland. Today, Braunvieh accounts for approximately 40% of the cattle in Switzerland and has been exported throughout the world.

Like its name indicated, Braunvieh range from very light to very dark brown but most often they are a mousy brown. The border of the muzzle, poll, udder and inside of its legs are very light. It is used primarily for milk production in Europe, holding up well when compared with the European Holstein-Friesian. They have also recently been recognized for the superior carcass qualities.

We always strongly encourage you to thoroughly check out each animal breeder you are interested in purchasing from before you make your final decision. With over 25,000 different breeders listed on this website, it is impossible for us to be able to vouch for every one! And while we do our best to ensure only the top farmers are listed here, it's always best to double check yourself.
