Bantam is a small variety of poultry, typically chicken. Named after the city of Bantam, which was once a major seaport, European sailors who were restocking live fowl for their long journeys found the small native breeds useful. There is a bantam counterpart to most large chicken breeds, which are usually one-fifth to one-quarter the size but exhibit the same characteristics. Bantam hens can lay up to 150 eggs per year, but the eggs are usually only half the size of a regular egg. These chickens have increased in popularity as their size makes them easy backyard chickens as well as show chickens. They can be found in a large variety of colors and feather patterns. True Bantam chickens have no larger counterparts and are typically popular show animals.
