The Awassi breed is the most popular and prevalent breed across south-west Asia. They originated in the Syro-Arabian desert and are also known by Ivesi, Baladi, Deiri, Syrian, Ausi, Nuami or Gezirieh. They are a fat-tailed breed and have a multicolored white with brown head and legs. The color combination can also be black or brown. Their ears are long and drooping.
The Awassi sheep is a very resilient and hardy breed that is well adapted to the desert climates and nomadic lifestyles of their breeders. This makes them the breed of choice anywhere in the Middle Eastern countries.
They are multipurpose animals being used for meat, milk and wool, though primarily used for milk. They have natural resistance to diseases, parasites, long distances, extreme temperatures and adverse feeding conditions. Ewes can weigh between 132-154lbs.
