The Asinara is a breed of feral donkey native to the island of Asinara, off the coast of Sardina, Italy. Almost the entire population of Asinara donkeys is albinistic, meaning lack pigment to their skin and appears white. They are said to have derived from a chance mutation in the Sardinian donkeys that were abandoned on the island in 1885 after habitants were forced to evacuate in order to turn the island into a lazaret and penal colony.
They were oringally used at flour mills and oil presses and now roams free on the island. Currently, there are approximately 100 still living widely on the island. A small amount of Asinaras can also be found in Alghero and Burgos.
