The Ankole-Watusi cattle are a breed of cattle that can trace its history back over 6,000 years. Native to Africa, these medium sized cattle with extremely long and large horns were imported to European and later North American zoos to attract customers. Their horns can reach up to eight feet tip to tip. Cows typically weigh between 900 – 1,200 pounds, with bulls averaging 1,000 – 1,600 pounds. Ankole-Watusi cattle have a straight topline and sloping rump with a neck hump preferred but not required. The horns on an adult Ankole-Watusi serve as a formidable defense against predators as well as a method of cooling in warm temperatures. Recent studies have shown that Ankole-Watusi meat has a lower fat and cholesterol content than other breeds. Their milk has an average of 10% fat, leading some farmers to use Ankole-Watusi cattle for cross-breeding to boost butter-fat content.
