The Altex breed of rabbits is a somewhat new breed whose name comes from the combination of Alabama and Texas. They were created to produce bucks to sires of “terminal cross” meat rabbits. These gain weight faster and are sold sooner which is also a benefit for less-developed countries. They have three traits that set them apart: efficient weight gain, high dressing percentage and high meat-to-bone ratio.
Altex rabbits can appear in several colors but the predominant one is white with dark points in the feet, tail, ears and nose. Does and bucks can weigh over 13 lbs at 6 months of age and they also mate around the same age.
Its best to cross and Altex sire with a New Zealand White or a California Dam.
