The Andalusian is also known as the Pure Spanish Horse, a horse breed from the Iberian Peninsula. The majority of Andalusians are gray but there is also bay, black, dun and palomino. Andalusian stallions and geldings average 15.5 hands at the withers and 1,129 lb in weight; mares average 15 hands and 908 lb.
Andalusian horses are elegant and strongly built. They have an uncanny ability to bring their haunches far underneath the body to elevate the forehand making them great at the upper movements of dressage, such as piaffe, passage and airs-above-the-ground. In the early history of the breed, certain white markings were considered to be indicators of character and good or bad luck. A Carthusian strain of the breed can display warts under the tail and have “horns”.
Andalusians today are used for show jumping, western usage and many other courses at horse shows.
